He has never done it before but now that he has had a quick run through, I am sure he will be trying his hand at it next year. He enjoyed it very much and the wind chill of zero degree(s?)and blowing snow didn't bother him a bit. (I stayed at my friend's house a bit south where it was nice and toasty inside with blue skies and sunshine)They did not catch any fish but a good time was had by all! His new adventure is great news for me; now I have yet another hobby for which to buy a Christmas present!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455290690266593596.post-56187610866691907932010-06-06T06:14:00.000-07:002010-06-06T06:14:21.722-07:00My Book's New Home!My book, "The Adirondacks that are the Other Half of Me" has a newly designed, wonderfully colorful, interactive, and easily accessible, new home...

My website, www.marypaladin.com has been given a complete and well needed update! I am thrilled with its appearance and cannot be happier in the timeframe in which it was done. Being a bit of a stickler when it comes to what I want as the representation of my work I am extremely particular; the young man that designed it did a great job. Thanks, Aaron (of Branded Designs Inc)!

Available for viewing on the site is my portfolio, which has many samples of Adirondack-inspired watercolors, murals, and giftware. Many of the watercolors have prints that are available for purchase there.

I hope you will take a moment to check it out; drop me a note, I love to get mail and will assuredly respond! The writer in me cannot refrain plus...I love to hear from fellow "Adirondackers"!!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455290690266593596.post-59064337007271782342010-05-03T07:35:00.000-07:002010-05-03T07:35:44.093-07:00It's a brand new day...and that means it is one day closer to my trek northward. May is our H-E double hockey sticks month! We have the spring cleaning of the house-in and out, the yard and the camp in the ADKS. We have opening the pool, opening the camp, opening our minds- yet keeping in them that we have all this prep stuff to do before we can become totally oblivious to our "real life". May is our daur's birthday month as well. When she was little it was a humungous deal and that really added pressure to our month but as she has gotten older she prefers we stifle it a bit. (Why does a 24th birthday with a party on our deck and pool get the response "No, that's okay. Thanks, but we'll probably go out." ? She may however let us take her to the Hibachi place north of here...Anyway, I digress-)

Soon it will be time to hit the concrete thoroughfare northward to our beloved Brant Lake. The time can never get here soon enough. I must admit thought that the time is rolling around a bit more quickly! As the years pass I dislike the trip itself more and more but, as the years go by I realize I, one day, will be an Adirondack year-round Wanna B!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455290690266593596.post-60885656605267094902010-01-27T08:52:00.000-08:002010-01-27T09:36:28.423-08:00My Mountain Lake PBS Interviewhttp://video.mountainlake.org/video/1388627720

Recently, I was interviewed by Paul Larsen of Mountain Lake PBS in Plattsburgh. The day was cold, damp and dismal. One of those ADK days that makes it hard to believe you are in a place that you enjoy more than any place you've lived! (Granted, I think I could give Hawaii a try and enjoy that, perhaps just a little...) The ride from Brant Lake seemed a bit longer than usual, and the roads a little less comfortable than usual, but I was excited and looking forward to it.

The interview went well. Paul was very nice as were his producers, and every one on staff. One, was originally, from a town near my winter home in PA; Centralia. What a small world it is in which we live, it is more evident each day! Centralia is long gone now; there is a mine fire that is burning underground and has been for decades. The town was moved(not evacuated-moved)and many left the area for good.

I was glad to have the opportunity to share my feelings about my book. It has been a passion of mine for many years and to have it -finally- "out there" for the world to read is a great feeling! I have, in a few of my presentations, said that now...I can die happy. Not that I want to do that any time soon- I've still got a few more books in me! But I am happy to be able to share the stories with others for many years to come. It was 45 degrees...he was there (in our 3 season camp) when it was 12 degrees in December!!! Chilly last night?!!??! Must be the sun reflecting from the new roof into his eyes that is dulling his senses.

We are in our 50s so we figure this new (metal) roof will last the rest of our natural lives- the next one will be someone elses decision. Last time he put on a new one was 15 years ago and it was tarpaper and shingles. Not too bad of a lifespan in North country weather. Also last time my husband had heat stroke- maybe that's why his senses are off!

Anyway, I am getting really itchy to hit the road. Anxious to see old friends- human and elemental!

Did my gardens around my home here in PA and while at the farm market getting my flowers I kept thinking about my color scheme for my pots at the lake this year. Begonias are always a winner as are Impatiens and, although I LOVE Petunias, I have no luck with them so I've passed them by; Geraniums are a good choice too. So I think this year it will be pink, white and red for the lake. Perhaps a pretty purple Sweet William that I saw today; never saw that particular color but they were gorgeous and they winter over in pots if protected. Better yet they smell great!

So in the mean time I will prepare and wait patiently. My book should be released (fingers crossed) by the time I head north so it will all be worth the wait!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455290690266593596.post-7940360593286726372009-04-25T12:24:00.000-07:002009-04-25T12:46:02.880-07:00"Soon Grasshoppa, Soon.........."With visions of David Carradine Kung Fu dancing through my head, I hear the beating in my chest as I try to be patient for my trek Northward.

My husband is up there as I write this; he's beginning the opening chores at our summer camp.
Apparently, "There's not a cloud in the sky." says he, the bragger.
"The leaves are all removed from the yard; I've opened everything up to let the breeze off the lake blow in. Feels great." Boasts he the one who blasted out of here Thursday am with clothes, work gear and hiking stuff for six days.

It's gorgeous here in central Pa; I've potted flowers on our deck all day. It seems we have (once again) jumped from Winter to Summer as the termometer passes 80 degrees though. Spring, my favorite time of the year, has been evasive as of late. Perhaps it will arrive. Perhaps.

Spring has hit the Adirondacks though apparently; cool nights, warm days. MY kind of weather. It won't be long before I head North; not really I guess, although it seems like 'forever' when I am sitting down here 350 miles southwest of where I want to be.

I must re-call David and repeat to myself...."Soon Grasshoppa, Soon".Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455290690266593596.post-56862812868936882102009-02-13T09:01:00.000-08:002009-02-13T09:19:24.714-08:00More Signings on the Calendar!I have two more locations at which I will be signing my (upcoming/spring release) book :
"The Adirondacks that are The Other Half of Me"

The Adirondack Reader in Inlet, NY summer appearance: TBA (I'll be sure to let you know tho!)

The Adirondack Reader " " " " " " " " Authors Fair: Sat. The date is TBA but I can tell you that the event will be held in Horicon (Brant Lake) NY, sponsored by the Horicon Historical Society. I am thrilled, and grateful, to have the opportunity to give a presentation in my ADK hometown of Brant Lake!

Now that I have the first "yes"(which I highlighted on my marketing log when I received the terrific news!), I am a bit nervous...I am not one to be at a loss for words generally, but now I must develop my format so that I am not one of those speakers that make the attendees want to pass out from the sheer exhaustion of listening to them drone on...and on....and on...

Since my book has quite a bit of humor throughout- and my mind has a bit humor within- I think I will travel the road of raw honesty. Most of the stories in my book will bring a chuckle so I hope my presentation will too.

Again-HOORAY! and Thank You to the Horicon Historical Society!!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455290690266593596.post-61099027224424230782009-01-10T19:27:00.000-08:002009-01-10T19:57:07.209-08:00Have I mentioned...?I have been working on a book about my time in the Adirondacks. It's proposed title is:
The Adirondacks, which are the Other Half of Me

It is not a memoir, I do not think anyone would want to read about me specifically; it is about my time in the Adirondacks over the years. Certainly, I report on adventures that I took, or events that occurred when I was present- but everything I have recounted are happenings that could have happened to, included, and/or been memorable for, anyone that has been enchanted by the majesty of the region.

From my first trip at six weeks of age up Tongue Mountain when my father's car overheated and my mother thought we would careen down the side never to be heard from again(told to me by my parents of course); to the heartfelt loss last summer, of the dear woman (two weeks short of her ninetieth birthday) who co-founded the vacation community on Brant Lake where we live the warmer six months of the year, I have remembered it all.

There are stories that have brought me smiles. There are stories that have brought me to tears and, there are stories at which I have laughed out loud as I remembered the silliness with which those times were riddled.

I revel in the recollection of those times. I hope that when I am finished, and it is all said and done, those that read it will revel in their own memories of their time spent in the Adirondacks.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455290690266593596.post-43227662327264359292009-01-07T10:13:00.000-08:002009-01-07T16:44:43.332-08:00I, am a "wanna-be"...I live (the cold) half of the year in central Pennsylvania. I live the (warmer) other half of the year in the southern Adirondacks. I plan to be one day...a "year rounder"

I am aware that I am one of the "summer people" but, someday I will not be-God willing... And if it should carry even a tiny bit of weight... I have been coming to the Adirondacks since I was 6 wks of age; over (OMG!) a half-century.

My husband and I would like to retire in the North Country; we met in the North Country as children. My husband is convinced our daur was conceived in the North Country (my apologies to those sensitive to that statement-myself and daur included!-but I write it the way I hear it...) We know that that daur has the North Country in her heart as do we. And although I am not ready for the big one yet; I think we may leave this world via the North Country. (Preferrably on one of those clear, bright, blue skied days...)

Now I know these ramblings can be thought of as suppositions at this stage of the game but I do want to make it known that we truly, truly do love the Adirondacks. We love the scenery (of course), we love the pace (reality can be made from dreams), we love the people (they are sincere) and, we love what our time in the Adirondacks have provided to our lives.

We see things differently than we would had we never become one with nature. We prioritize differently than we would had we not seen life's value of time, afforded by spending time in the Adirondacks. And we choose relationships by the value of the person, not their acquisitions or offerings.

Yes, I am a "wanna-be" but, if everything goes as planned, I will move north in a few years. I know I will never be native to the Adirondacks but, perhaps I can claim to be a year rounder...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1
